Datalogue®  Searching

Basic Searching Techniques

askSam is a Free-Form Database which allows the simultaneous search for data across all defined fields.  In all Datalogue®  entries, all data is entered into specific fields  - and you must know the names of these fields to use them effectively.

All fields are defined by a colon at the end of a word.  Read the following to fully understand the field system for Datalogue® searching. After that, searching Datalogue®  for anything is easy.  There are two basic searches - all other searches are variations on these two basic methods.

1.       field-specific searches, for example:

To display everything in the opera:* field, if you enter opera:*           into the search window, you will get the specific field output for           7,800 entries; note: when doing any kind of a specific           field output search, an asterisk  ( * ) must always           immediately - no space - follow  the colon; when searching a           specific field  with already known  data, there must be a single           space  between the colon and the  first word of the data in that           field, e.g. [Aida: Renata Tebaldi] - brackets necessary

2.       general data searches

enter a name (singer, composer, opera title, librettist,           conductor etc.), so enter Sutherland into the search window;           you will get Joan Sutherland (soprano) and Margaret           Sutherland (composer);  if you want only the entries of Joan,           then the search entry must be in brackets e.g. [Joan           Sutherland]
